Every day, women experience physical, sexual, and psychological violence—regardless of their age, social class, or background. The violence occurs in intimate relationships, at work, or in public. Women's shelters and specialized counseling centers offer these women protection from further violence. They help them overcome the consequences of violence and abuse and build a violence-free life.
The Women's Shelter Coordination Association (FHK) supports women's shelters and specialist counseling centers throughout Germany in terms of expertise and in their political work.
The Women's Shelter Coordination Association (FHK) was founded in Frankfurt am Main in 2001 at the initiative of welfare organizations to work on behalf of its members to reduce violence against women and improve support for affected women and their children. FHK coordinates, networks, and supports the support system, promotes professional cooperation, and pools practical experience to incorporate it into political decision-making processes and professional policy discourse.
The association has been based in Berlin since 2010.
Members of FHK are the Federal Association of Workers' Welfare Associations, the German Caritas Association, the Paritätische Gesamtverband, the Diakonie Deutschland and the Social Service of Catholic Women as well as other providers of women's shelters and specialist advice centers.
With a total of over 280 women's shelters and more than 285 specialist counseling centers, the members promote and secure the help and support system for women affected by violence and for their children.
The work of FHK is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education, Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ).
