The abbreviation LGBTI stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans- and intersex people.
LGBTI people experience violence and Discrimination in public, at work, in social institutions or organizations, in the family or in relationships.
LGBTI people affected by violence are also exposed to structural discrimination, which can make it difficult to seek help and overcome violence.
For transgender people, it is discriminatory if their gender identity is not recognized.
Intersex people are often subjected to hormonal treatments or genital surgeries in childhood, which they experience as violence and can lead to trauma. Intersex advocacy organizations, however, accuse this of human rights violations.
There are specialist counselling centres and women’s shelters that also serve lesbians, bisexual women and trans- and intersex people. Support services decide on a case-by-case basis how they can support these individuals. The support needs of LGBTI people affected by violence must be more fully addressed in support services.
