The term femicide refers to the targeted killing of women because of their sexNot every (intentional) killing of a woman is necessarily a femicide. Femicides are those homicides in which women are killed because of their position as women in society, not by chance or due to individual circumstances. For example, women are disproportionately often victims of homicides in existing or former relationships. Often, the crimes are preceded by intimate partner violence.
"Femicide – the intentional killing of women because of their gender or because of 'violations' of the traditional social and patriarchal roles assigned to women – is not only the most extreme form of gender-based violence against women, it is also an extreme expression of their discrimination and gender inequality." - EU project FEM-United -
The designation as Femicide or Femicide contributes to making the acts more visible and to making it clear that this form of violence is deeply rooted in society and structures: femicides are not isolated cases, but the result of patriarchal, structurally anchored power relations and social inequality between the sexes.
