Project period: August 2019 to December 2022
Women's shelter coordination developed a protection concept against digital violence in women's shelters, on the security of women's shelter locations and on data protection.
Without additional security measures, women experiencing violence are often at risk of digital violence even in women's shelters. If a woman experiencing violence manages to reach safety, the violence often continues through other means. For example, she may be threatened, insulted, or blackmailed via her smartphone by her (ex-)partner or family members.
With a protection plan, the Women's Shelter Coordination Office aims to enable the safe use of digital media in women's shelters without endangering residents, staff, or the site. This plan is intended to raise awareness of the risks associated with digital media and data and ensure data protection in women's shelters. The plan will explain technical steps to preventively protect residents and staff from digital violence and provide psychosocial and legal support services for those already affected.
An inventory will be conducted to determine which forms of digital violence occur in women's shelters, their extent, and the consequences for those affected. Furthermore, the implementation of data protection guidelines will be analyzed. At the same time, the fundamental principle of maintaining the confidentiality of addresses of women's shelters and alternative concepts with known addresses will be discussed with stakeholders. Following this, FHK will organize accompanying training courses and test the protection concept at model locations.
The project was funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
